The collaborative laboratory Associação AlmaScience - Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Celulose para Aplicações Inteligentes e Sustentáveis (CoLab AlmaScience), has opened a job position for the role of a Junior Researcher - Smart Materials (M/F/D).
AlmaScience Colab is an innovation lab and incubator focused on the development and early-stage commercialization of paper and cellulose based electronic devices and engineered materials. We work with brands and tier 1 companies on the national and international level to deliver innovation in IOT, Retail, Brand security, Supply Chain, Health, Agriculture and more.
In close contact with the academic and the CoLab’s industry associates, and within a multidisciplinary scientific environment, integrated in the AlmaScience team working in Recovery and Resilience Plan Agenda the candidate will conduct applied and innovation-oriented R&D activities in the field of Materials and Processing.


Candidate profile / admission requirements

The candidate must have a master’s degree in Materials Science, Nanotechnologies, Chemistry, or related fields, with experience in (bio)materials synthesis and applications. Knowledge on cellulose-based substrates and printing techniques deposition will be valued.
The candidate must also be able to demonstrate:
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team in an international environment and to work independently;
• Strong interest in applied research;
• Excellent communication skills with fluency in English.

Main attributions
The Junior Researcher shall be responsible for performing the following tasks:
• (Bio)materials and hybrid materials synthesis;
• Materials deposition using solution-based techniques;
• Applications in coatings and sensors for packaging;
• Participation in the dissemination and promotion activities.

The Junior Researcher shall fully devote the whole of his/her professional activity to AlmaScience, on an exclusive basis.


Place of work
The Junior Researcher working place shall be at the premises of AlmaScience located in Madan Park in the Lisbon and Caparica area with the possibility of hybrid working scheme (on-site and remote). He/she shall travel, in Portugal or abroad, as required by his/her attributions or as necessary for his/her activity.

Type of Contract, Duration and Reference remuneration
Uncertain Term Work Contract, under the Portuguese Labor Code, with a maximum duration previewed of 3 years. The contract is expected to start no later than March 2023 and is subjected to budget availability. The reference remuneration will be adjusted in accordance with the candidate profile and experience.

The Project Manager oversees the planning, implementation, and tracking of projects, delivering goals, in time and quality, under project constraints.


Candidate profile / admission requirements
The candidate must have:

• Minimum BSc in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial or Biomedical Engineering;
• Total of 3 years+ experience in design, development and project management of physical product development;
• Experience in multi-disciplinary projects;
• Experienced in applying various project management tools for tracking development projects against planned budgets and timelines;
• Strong communication skills, great inter-personal skills;
• Knowledge/technical background in one (or more) of the disciplines – mechanics, electronics, materials science – an advantage.

Envisioned as a bridge to connect – on one side – a set of science producers with outstanding track record at European level in the fields of Advanced functional materials and pioneers in promoting the area of Transparent Electronics and Paper Electronics and – on the other side – major paper and pulp developers and producers and a set of its end-users willing to revolutionize their market approach, CoLAB AlmaScience aims to establish in Portugal an integrated and innovative sustainable smart paper-based platform able to serve multi-sectors with fully recyclable product-ranges, capturing the needs associated with the Internet of Things (IoT).

As a marketing manager, the candidate will be working with the VP of Business, other team members, and external providers and have the overall responsibility over marketing related tasks such as branding, messaging and value proposition definition, digital media strategy, website and digital platforms contents, etc.
This position requires creativity and flexibility to rapidly turn concepts into compelling product stories.


Candidate profile / admission requirements

The candidate must have:

• 3 years of experience in a product marketing function for a new technology company/division (Agro, Health, IOT, etc.).
• Track record of working with designers, copywriters, content writers, and web developers to develop high quality marketing materials and landing pages.
• Marketing communication experience, including digital and print.
• Digital marketing experience, in specific LinkedIn®.

The Senior Researcher shall fully devote the whole of his/her professional activity to AlmaScience on an exclusive basis.


Place of work
The Senior Researcher working place shall be at the premises of AlmaScience branch located in RAIZ – Forest and Paper Research Institute in Aveiro, and he/she shall travel in Portugal or abroad, as required by his/her professional activity.

Reference remuneration statue

The reference remuneration statue for this position at the CoLAB AlmaScience will be adjusted in accordance with the candidate profile and experience.

Type of contract and applicable legislation
The hiring of the Junior Researcher shall be made in accordance with the Portuguese Labour Code.
The contract should begin as soon as possible (but expectedly no later than March 2022).

Jury composition
Applications shall be subject to evaluation by a jury composed of the following members:

  • President – Luís Pereira (AlmaScience – Scientific and Technical Director)
  • First effective member – Carlos Pascoal Neto (Raiz – Instituto da Floresta e do Papel)
  • Second effective member – Elvira Fortunato (FCT-NOVA – Full Professor)
  • Third Member – Silvia Garcia (INCM - Head of Innovation Lab).

Selection criteria
Applications will be ordered based on curriculum evaluation and, if deemed necessary by the jury, an interview will be conducted. In all cases, the suitability of the candidate’s profile will be considered according to the duties / activities to be performed.
Applications that do not include all elements required in the application submission will be automatically excluded from the competition. The selection phases and criteria and their respective weighting shall be as follows:

  1. First phase – curriculum evaluation Curriculum vitae evaluation (50%);
  2. Experience in the field of the main attributions (50%);

If the jury evaluates the candidate with a total value above 60% in the first two criteria, the candidate will advance for the professional interview phase; if the evaluation lays below the 60% limit, the candidate will be excluded.

Second phase – professional interview – if the candidate advances to the professional interview phase, the selection criteria and their respective weighting shall be as follows:
  1. Curriculum vitae evaluation (35%);
  2. Experience in the field of the main attributions (35%);
  3. Professional interview (30%).

Final Decision
The final deliberation of the jury shall be homologated by the ultimate governing body of AlmaScience that is also responsible for the final decision of hiring. CoLAB AlmaScience is free to fill the position or not and may suspend or terminate the process at any time.

Job summary
The collaborative laboratory Associação AlmaScience - Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Celulose para Aplicações Inteligentes e Sustentáveis (CoLab AlmaScience), has opened a job position for the role of Digital Control Designer/Programmer (M/F/D).
AlmaScience Colab is an innovation lab and incubator focused on the development and early-stage commercialization of paper and cellulose based electronic devices and engineered materials. We work with brands and tier 1 companies on the national and international level to deliver innovation in IOT, Retail, Brand security, Supply Chain, Health, Agriculture and more.
In close contact with the academic and the industry associates of the CoLab, and within a multidisciplinary scientific environment, integrated in the AlmaScience team working in Recovery and Resilience Plan Mobilizing Agendas the candidate will conduct activities in the field of microcontroller programming serving the development of sensing solutions with application in smart surfaces and smart packaging.


Candidate profile / admission requirements

The candidate must have a master's degree in the areas of Informatics, electronics, physics, or related fields.

The candidate should have expertise in:

• Design and layout of digital/microcontroller circuits;
• Code editors, compilers, and debuggers for microcontrollers;
• Smartphone or web apps for mobile platforms.

Preference will be given to anyone with experience in:
• Reading circuit schematics;
• Higher level languages, such as C#, Delphi or Java.

The candidate must also be able to demonstrate:
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team in an international environment and to work independently;
• Strong interest in applied and product-oriented innovation;
• Good communication skills with fluency in English.

Main attributions
The Digital Control Designer/Programmer shall be responsible for performing the following tasks:
• Design and layout of digital/microcontroller-based circuits as well as the software programming;
• Development mobile/web applications and server software for IoT and Smart Sensors;
• Participation in the dissemination and promotion activities.

The Researcher shall fully devote the whole of his/her professional activity to AlmaScience, on an exclusive basis.


Place of work
The researcher working place shall be at the premises of AlmaScience located in Madan Park in the Lisbon and Caparica area with the possibility of hybrid working scheme (on-site and remote). He/she shall travel, in Portugal or abroad, as required by his/her attributions or as necessary for his/her activity.

Type of Contract, Duration and Reference remuneration
Uncertain Term Work Contract, under the Portuguese Labor Code, with a maximum duration previewed of 3 years. The contract is expected to start no later than March 2023 and is subjected to budget availability. The reference remuneration will be adjusted in accordance with the candidate profile and experience.
