AlmaScience Researchers Honored with 2023 Best Paper Award by IEEE Journal of Microwaves
Carolina Gouveia and Ricardo Torres, researchers at AlmaScience, are among the paper's authors awarded the 2023 Best Paper Award by the IEEE Journal of Microwaves. The winning article, titled “Microwave-Enabled Wearables: Underpinning Technologies, Integration Platforms, and Next-Generation Roadmap”, was announced by the journal in March this year.
The paper is a comprehensive review discussing the role of microwave technologies in the development of next-generation wearable devices. It highlights research contributions made by AlmaScience’s researchers during their respective Ph.D. studies.
Carolina Gouveia’s work describes a radar system integrated into a car seat to remotely monitor the driver’s vital signs. The integration was made possible through the development of textile-based antennas, enabling the radar system to be seamlessly embedded into the seat upholstery.
Ricardo Torres’ contribution involved the development and analysis of wireless sensor networks based on backscatter communication—a low-power technology enabling a broad range of applications, from sensor systems to complex signal modulation communications. Due to their extremely low energy consumption resulting from the absence of active signal generation, these radios are ideal for energy-constrained systems. His work also included the development of harmonic transponder-based sensors, which support ultra-low-power communication. These devices help reduce both the production cost and system complexity of communication technologies while promoting energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
The work discussed in this paper aligns with AlmaScience’s vision: developing electronics using flexible and sustainable materials to enable smart, eco-friendly products from the design stage—streamlining processes and reducing production costs.
